Hero or Villain?

For the past 5 weeks we have been studying bushrangers. They have both fascinated and baffled us, but we all agree life in Australia was hard in the times of bushranging and we can understand why some people chose this lifestyle.

Now there has been much debate between fellow classmates about the great Ned Kelly. Some of us believe that Ned was a villain through and through, killing police and stealing his way through life. On the other hand some of us believe that Ned was born into a life of crime and needed to steal to help his family after his father’s death, therefore making him a hero.

So what do you think, is Ned Kelly a hero or villain?

Please leave us a post and let us know what you think and why….

I think Ned Kelly was both a hero and a villain. A hero because he saved a boy from drowning and gave the money he stole to the poor. A villain because he killed people.

Yes Ned did save Richard Shelton from drowning, so that’s one heroic thing, but like Millie said you can’t just forget all the bad things. For instance all thr robberies and murders he committed. As I said in my speech, so many people romanticise Ned Kelly’s story these days or at least alter the facts a bit. But in the end Ned Kelly is a villain and we all know that deep inside…

So maybe he was a hero in the eyes of the people he helped but not in the eyes of the good.

In my mind Ned Kelly is not a hero at all. If we put ourselves in the shoes of those he robbed we would be scared witless and in fear of our lives. A hero does not inspire fear rather a hero inspires others to attempt the incredible and become fearless. Therefore Ned Kelly is just a common criminal.

yes, but the people in the hold ups weren’t very scared. he treated them nice, bought them drinks from the bar/motel next door. he didn’t physically hurt them. and when he was hung, many people he help hostage tried to save him.

I don’t believe that Ned Kelly was a hero as he consistently broke the law. I certainly wouldn’t want my children looking up to him.

I think that because Ned Kelly came from a poor family and suffered some injustice during his life; this was perhaps why he chose this path that ultimately led to his death. I think he was a hero because he stood up for his family and friends.

i think he stood up for his friends and family because his mom got prisoned in jail when she was pregnant, 3 days old.

I think Ned Kelly was a bit of a Hero…..he is an Australian Icon despite his antics back in the day. Love this blog everyone, I think you all know how to put a blog together better than me!

Ned Kelly was from a poor Irish family who were treated very badly by the authorities in that time. I think he was a hero who fought for what he believed in. He loved his family and tried to help those around him. Unfortunately he broke the law to do so and found himself in a bad situation. The evidence as to what actually happened can be confusing but he did try to shoot his way out. He was punished for his “crimes”. However I still look at him as a hero in the Australian tradition of fighting for the underdog. Chris Dowling, Michaela’s Nanna.

I think he was a hero because he fought for what he believed in and even though his actions were wrong his intentions were justified.

i believe ned kelly was a hero because he saved a young boy who fall in the river when going to school and i also think he was a victim because for all that he did was to protect his family

Ned Kelly is considered by many a villain.
I believe he was young and angry.
He saw a system which was very unfair
to the poor, including his own family.

The other side is hero. Folk hero and
    symbol of Irish Australian resistance,
    against Anglo Australian ruling class.
He was inventive and clever. I wonder
what his life would be, if he was born
    today? …villain or hero .

Edward (Ned) Kelly famours bushranger. Australia’s love of the larrikin may have changed the way we look at a lawbreaking villain into a folk hero

Ned Kelly was a villain who killed, robbed and terrorized towns. He broke the law and committed many crimes starting from a young age. If Ned Kelly was alive today he would not be considered a hero.

Unfortunatly Ned kelly became a villan because he came from a very poor family wich he cared for and wanted to help them live a better life. Ned Kelly decided to go and rob banks and stores and anything that he could get his hands on to help his family. In doing so that was when he became a villan by killing police and people. Ned kelly was on the run for many years before he was caught and hanged.
So in saying this i would have to call him a villan.

Ned Kelly was a hero despite commiting some terible crimes including murder and stealing because he represented the fight against the unfair justice system and inequality faced by the poor irish convicts in australia. at the time and therefore his hero status in my view is warranted in australian folklore.

Ned Kelly is a villain as he shot three policemen, robbed two a banks, stole horses and cattle. Only villains do something stupid like that, Hero saves people, doesn’t kill, steal. You get arrested if you do something bad, but when you do something good, you get rewarded like when he saved Richard from drowning he got rewarded
